A Brief History
Over the past 10 years, The Heart has become a constant and an inspiration in the lives of countless Whitehorse kids and families. Our teachers and staff model a deep commitment to our values, demonstrating healthy relationships, the power of practice, and the importance of a thriving community - along with the delight, playfulness and pride that comes from arts exploration. We believe, and studies corroborate this claim, that kids with strong regular physical activity, healthy community structures and positive, consistent adult presence make better choices and have better health outcomes. We take this responsibility very seriously.
The Heart has established itself as a significant regional employer, and economic driver in the community. Job training, and meaningful local employment is a key tenet of how we operate. Not only do many of our students progress to study art at the university level and to perform professionally, but many come back to The Heart as teachers, administrators and board members. We have an incredibly committed team with deep community roots, and our fee-based programs keep considerable dollars within the Whitehorse community.
Our Mission
The Heart of Riverdale is an arts-based community centre; a welcoming and inclusive space for the Whitehorse community to gather, connect, share and learn. Our arts education, public programming, and the facility itself offer multi-generational experiences that enrich the community through a shared journey in art. With a focus on creative development for youth, we build self-confidence, citizenship and healthy lifestyles; nurturing community-minded artists and artistic spirits of the Yukon, guiding them to realize their limitless creative potential in art and in life.
